The Altadena Hillside Management Ordinance was unanimously approved by the Regional Planning Commission on February 24th 2010 and approved by the Board of Supervisors on November 16th 2010. This amendment to the Altadena Community Standards District went into effect on December 16th, 2010.
Background:
The Altadena Hillside Management Ordinance is an amendment to the Altadena Community Standards District which is intended to establish standards to protect and preserve the unique hillside views enjoyed by the community of Altadena. This amendment is the result of collaboration between the members of the Altadena Hillside Ordinance Committee and the Department of Regional Planning (DRP). If approved, this amendment will create a designation of Significant Ridgelines, lower grading thresholds on hillside parcels and create stricter permitting processes for development inside designated hillside areas.
Over 13,000 notices were mailed inviting property owners in Altadena inviting them to attend a community meeting on this issue. On Wednesday February 18th, over 120 community members came out to hear our County planning staff explain the draft amendment and voice their support, comments and concerns. After planning staff presented the standards, community residents, business people and local representatives asked questions, gave comments and voted their clear consensus that the draft should move forward to the Regional Planning Commission. As several issues were identified at the meeting by the community as being of concern in the existing draft language, Regional Planning staff worked with the Hillside Ordinance committee to incorporate this feedback and make necessary changes to reflect the community’s wishes.
