President’s Day Celebration
Civil Rights Attorney John Burton, vice chair of the Owen Brown Gravesite Committee, will give a talk about President Abraham Lincoln and the constitutionality of abolition on February 18 at 10:30 am at the gravesite. He will trace Lincoln’s evolving ideas during the Civil War, the legality of abolishing slavery as opposed to containing it, and Constitutional amendments that made slavery illegal and granted equal protection under the law. There will be time for questions and a lively discussion.
This public talk is presented by the Owen Brown Gravesite Committee to commemorate Presidents Day 2023. Everyone is welcome. The program will be under an hour; participants are advised to bring water, and folding stools or blankets if they wish.
Access to the gravesite is from the top of El Prieto Road in Altadena Meadows. Park on the street, walk up the private drive to Lincoln Avenue Water Company, and follow signage from its parking lot. It is a short but steep hike that takes 10-15 minutes.
